Lady Gaga

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta (born March 28, 1986), better known by her stage name Lady Gaga, is an American pop singer. She began performing in the rock music scene of New York City's Lower East Side in 2003 and enrolled at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. She soon signed with Streamline Records, an imprint of Interscope Records. During her early time at Interscope, she worked as a songwriter for fellow label artists and captured the attention of Akon, who recognized her vocal abilities, and signed her to his own label, Kon Live Distribution.

In 2008, Gaga came to prominence following the release of her debut album The Fame, which was a commercial success spawning two international number one singles — "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" — and reaching number one in the United Kingdom, Canada, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Ireland. The album accomplished chart positions within the top-ten of countries worldwide, whilst in the United States, topped the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart and peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 chart. After having already embarked on her first headlining tour The Fame Ball Tour by the fourth quarter of 2009, Gaga began her second The Monster Ball Tour, on which, she currently performs. Her most recent album The Fame Monster, an extension of her debut album, produced a further two global chart-topping singles "Bad Romance" and "Telephone". Her second studio album, Born This Way, is scheduled for release in 2011.

Inspired by glam rock artists like David Bowie and Queen, as well as pop singers such as Madonna and Michael Jackson, Gaga is well-recognized for her outrĂ© sense of style as a recording artist, in fashion and in performance. Gaga has sold more than 15 million albums and 51 million singles worldwide; her contributions to the music industry have also garnered her numerous awards including two Grammy Awards, amongst twelve nominations. By Billboard, she was named the Artist of the Year in 2010  and ranked the 73rd Artist of the 2000–10 decade. Gaga has been included in Time magazine's annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world as well as Forbes' list of the 100 Most Powerful and Influential celebrities in the world. Forbes also placed her at number seven on their annual list of the World's 100 Most Powerful Women.

Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey (born March 27, 1970) is an American pop/R&B singer-songwriter, record producer and actress. She made her recording debut, in 1990, under the guidance of Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola, and became the first recording artist to have her first five singles top the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Following her marriage to Mottola, in 1993, a series of hit records established her position as Columbia Records' highest-selling act.
Following her separation from Mottola, in 1997, she introduced elements of hip hop into her album work, to much initial success, but her popularity was in decline when she left Columbia, in 2001. She signed a record $80 million dollar deal with Virgin Records, only to be dropped from the label and bought out of her contract in the following year. This radical turn of events was due to the highly publicized physical and emotional breakdown, as well as the poor reception that was given to Glitter, her film and soundtrack project. In 2002, Carey signed with Island Records, and, after a relatively unsuccessful period, she returned to the top of pop music, in 2005, with her album, The Emancipation of Mimi.[2][3]
According to Island Def Jam, Carey has sold more than 200 million albums, singles and videos worldwide, which makes her one of the world's best-selling music artists.[4][5] Carey was cited as the world’s best-selling recording artist of the 1990s at the 1998 World Music Awards[6][7] and was also named the best-selling female artist of the millennium by the same award-giving body in 2000.[8][9][10] According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), she is the third-best-selling female artist. Carey's total U.S. album sales stand at 64.5 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan. [11] [12][13] In 2008, Carey earned her eighteenth number one single on the Hot 100, the most for any solo artist.[14][15] Aside from her commercial accomplishments, she has earned five Grammy Awards and is known for her five-octave vocal range, power, melismatic style and use of the whistle register.
